Drama Intent

Drama Curriculum Map

The Drama Curriculum is designed  to inspire pupils to develop a love of Drama and their talent as actors, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement.  Drama has encouraged diversity and free thought since the start of human advancement, not concerned with borders or politics, and has promoted understanding and creativity regardless of the context.

Therefore, within our curriculum, students will learn to express their understanding of various styles, forms, and genres of performance with origins in all continents of the globe. Along our journey, we will expose our students to various cultures and identities, aiding them to challenge closed mindsets, encouraging individuality. With inclusivity at the heart of all we do as teachers, an environment of safety and self-expression will be paramount in all of our lessons here at the Neale-Wade Academy.

Our curriculum is relevant because it gives our pupils opportunities to build on their self-confidence, team-building and public speaking skills, giving them greater potential for future success at university, and in industry related careers in performance and design.

Approach to the curriculum Our approach is broken down into three core areas:

  • Thematic understanding of the topic
  • Practical performance skills, broken down into vocal and physical abilities
  • Wider career prospects through building and reinforcing transferable skills and cross-curricular links

The aims of the Drama Curriculum are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Devise, perform, review and evaluate Drama across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the renowned practitioners both past and present.
  • Learn to utilise their voices and bodies, to devise and structure their ideas, either individually or as part of a team.
  • Have the opportunity to experiment with technical theatre styles, using lighting, sound and projection technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress within the production side of theatre.
  • Learn the fundamentals of costume, stage and make-up design to allow students to express their vision of performance in thought-provoking and imaginative ways.
  • Understand and explore how drama is created, produced and communicated, with focus on a wide breadth of cultures, including: Greek, German, Russian, South American, Japanese, Italian and British theatre.
  • Can feel safe and secure in expressing themselves and their ideas within the school context.
  • To open academic discourse on a number of relevant issues within our society.
